Why the Bad Referee Call by Koman Coulibaly in USA Soccer World Cup?
June 21st, 2010The World Cup soccer game of the USA against Slovenia was very exciting, five goals were shot and it could have been World Cup soccer at its finest, however the game was entirely ruined by some highly questionable clearly wrong decisions by the referee Koman Coulibaly.
The decision was just so bad that it could not be explained, and in actual fact Koman Coulibaly never tried to explain his poor decision. Hundreds of millions of television viewers could see on the high-definition television screens that the soccer referee made a bad decision. This happened not only in this game, but also in other soccer games from other countries.
What was really happening here? Was it just that a certain Koman Coulibaly from one of the poorest countries in the world had poor eyesight on that day, or maybe had some nightmares the day before and could not think clearly? No, that is not very likely.
Whenever decisions are being made in the world that are so bad, we can assume with a high degree of certainty that there is some strange powerful motivation behind it, such as money or some sort of criminal extortion.Just like in the case of BP where they made some terrible decisions that resulted in an environmental catastrophe, it is being found that these decisions are driven by money, trying to save drilling costs. Just like here in our country, where children who are displaying ADHD symptoms as a result from pesticides in the food or highly toxic chemicals from Teflon, are given very profitable psychotropic drugs, instead of trying to tackle the problem at the source. These are bad decisions driven by money.
Now in a case of Koman Coulibaly it is possible that there is some money behind the scenes, and it would certainly not be very expensive to bribe somebody from one of the poorest countries in the world. However, I think that in this case it’s even worse. It is just as likely or more likely that he’s being unduly subjected to pressure by some sort of criminal group or gangster band. Let’s just assume that some sort of terrorist-like operation from a hostile country tells him or his family at home just before the game that unless Team USA loses, his family in his home country is toast. The poor man would be under tremendous stress and would likely not be able to think very clearly and probably would make decisions just as poorly as he did in the game.
Now FIFA is always trying to protect their players and referees by keeping them safely guarded and transported in Africa and to protect them from any physical assault and anything, which is a good thing. However this protection is not enough. There is no "witless protection" program being offered to referees, especially not in a poor country such as Koman Coulibaly’s Mali. There is really nothing that would protect the world and referees from such undue criminal influences and threats at this point. In fact referees in soccer don’t even need to justify or explain their decisions, which gives them an unbelievable power to make bad decisions, and because of that power they can be subjected to undue pressure. FIFA is trying to protect Koman Coulibaly (and soccer) by just taking him out of any future games, and that it good, but it is not the best they can do, because now it’s already too late, if anything of what I’m speculating here is true, he was already pressured into making bad judgement calls.
Here’s what I recommend in order to protect referees and the entire game of soccer for the world: change the rules so that if there is some sort of questionable call by a referee, high-definition television cameras and instant TV recording replay will be used in order to resolve the mistakes with uncanny accuracy, based on actual visible observation, not on "judgement". That will make it impossible for any referees to come up with strange arbitrary “judgement” calls, and it would take away the power to make such strange calls, which makes referees useless in the hands of criminal or financial extortion.
It will also keep the game of soccer at a much higher level of quality. Right now we have a situation where hundreds of millions of viewers on their high-definition television screens have a higher quality of perception of the game on their screens and can make a more accurate judgment calls than most of the referees in the field. Each time the referee makes a wrong call, the entire game of soccer is being ruined for all. This is not a good way to make friends, among countries or between soccer and their fans.
In fact, each bad referee call just ruins it for the entire game of soccer worldwide, and FIFA would do much better in allowing accurate and correct calls by using high-definition camera replays.
Let’s face it, without television the entire game of soccer would be useless, there would be no FIFA, there would be no World Cup, there would be nothing. Don’t tell me that if the game was broadcast on the radio or in the newspaper anybody would be interested.
Every time the referee calls a game differently than it is actually being shown to hundreds of millions of viewers on the television, it is a huge lie being propagated, and it spoils the quality of World Cup soccer. It creates a huge amount of upsetness with all fans. You cannot expect the referees on the field to see as much as the high-definition cameras that are over the court. And in addition to that, each camera can be set to replay every scene over and over, and it can show it in slow motion the ball literally under a microscope.
I don’t even want to know under how much pressure judges like Koman Coulibali or any of the other judges were, who made terrible mis-calls in soccer, but I can just imagine that they’ll probably fearing for their lives or the lives of their wives and relatives, either now or in the future, and nobody gives them any "witless protection".
Using high-definition cameras for the final judgment call in all these situations will not only make it impossible for any of these judges to be extorted and suppressed, but it would keep the entire game of soccer at a high level of truth and clarity and fairness and honesty, so that the entire world can enjoy the most popular game in the World at an ever-increasing pace.
Someone, please tell FIFA! Smarten up.
