Pseudoscience and Tom Cruise - Oprah TV in Telluride

May 4th, 2008

As Oprah mentioned in her latest interview with Tom Cruise in Telluride, Tom Cruise drew a lot of criticism for calling psychiatry a pseudoscience on TV with Matt Lauer, and in actual fact this resulted in a steady stream of controversy in the media. The psychiatric industry supporters were calling Tom Cruise not scientific and were trying to discredit him, of course in order to safeguard their own vested interests. It appears that they succeeded to a large extent. Now here is a piece of news that will probably never make it into the large mainstream media, but it is probably more important than all the controversy stirred up by the psychiatric industry:

Institute of Medicine finds that none of the psychiatric posttraumatic stress disorder drugs actually work.

The Institute of medicine recently launched an independent review of 90 clinical scientific studies into the use of using psychiatric drugs in order to treat posttraumatic stress disorder. He is the stunning secret, that will probably never make it into the news: none of these 90 clinical studies could demonstrate that any of the psychiatric drugs and was any more effective in treating posttraumatic stress disorder than your average sugar pill, the placebo used in those studies.

Which is the pseudoscience?

I think it is just shocking that the industry gets a way with lying and cheating like that. They’re people are taking tablets that have all sorts of side effects at huge expense at medical risk, yet the supposed disease that they are supposedly treating, can be treated just as good by taking sugar tablets. This is definitely the very worst thing I’ve ever seen. I believe pseudoscience is actually a euphemism for that type of money driven operation. Tom Cruise was actually too kind to the psychiatrists when he called them pseudoscience, I think harsher words are even more appropriate.

What do YOU think?

Is psychiatry a pseudoscience?
